After a long, LONG 16-month refurbishment, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad finally reopened in Magic Kingdom earlier this year on May 3rd. However, it never felt fully reopened.

When Big Thunder Mountain reopened in May, it featured a smoother track, new scenes, and a totally new feel. We loved the changes! That being said, there was one specific thing that the ride was missing, and you’ve probably heard us talk about it before. Well, now things are starting to feel more complete!
The next time you ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, you’ll see that Disney Imagineering has brought back the mom and dad opossum!
The opossums are back!
It’s nice to see the ride getting closer to completion, and we’re super excited to see some of the opossums back. Of course, they’re still missing their babies, but Disney Imagineering did confirm that the rest of the family will be returning soon. Until then, it’s nice to see our old friends home. There are some empty branches, so plenty of space!

The opossum family is getting settled in just in time for the holiday season. Can you believe that Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party officially kicks off next week?! The party falls on select nights from November 8th through December 22nd, 2026. Tickets are still available for purchase right now!
Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade
The party runs from 7 PM till midnight, but you can enter the park starting at 4 PM to enjoy some time in Magic Kingdom before it closes to the public for the party.
Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party
The Christmas party offers exclusive entertainment, access to Magic Kingdom attractions (some with special holiday overlays), exclusive character meet-and-greets, festive treats, and free cookies and cocoa all night long! It’s a special experience that we love to do during the Christmas season.
