We’re back at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for more menu changes. Last week, we tried the new dishes at Sci-Fi Dine-in Theater Restaurant, and today we’re here to check out the changes at the 50’s Prime Time Cafe.
50’s Prime Time Café is in Echo Lake near Hollywood & Vine and Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction.
It plays heavily into the 1950s motif, promising to bring you “home-cooked” meals.
Appetizers
Jalapeño Popper Deviled Eggs – $11
Cilantro, jalapeño, and traditional deviled eggs
These are great. They have a strong jalapeño heat and legitimate spice. Very good, two thumbs up.
Creamy Tomato Soup – $9
This soup is reminiscent of grilled cheese, aided by the croutons. The soup flavor is inexplicable. It’s orange, unlike your traditional red tomato soup. There’s definitely a lot of dairy, a lot of cheese. We caught a little bit of tomato on the back end. It’s not bad, but it’s not phenomenal.
Entrées
Grandpa Jean’s Chicken Pot Pie – $24
A Traditional Pastry Crust Filled with Chicken, Potatoes, Carrots, Celery, Onions, Corn, and Peas
This is like a deconstructed chicken pot pie. The filling is more like a soup with a pastry pillow. The pie crust is nice and flaky, very buttery. The soup has nice big chunks of chicken with peas and carrots. Everything tastes fresh, and the broth is creamy.
They got rid of the chicken noodle soup, which many people liked, but this is like a reincarnation. Instead of noodles, you get the pastry. It’s filling and tasty. We recommend this.
Blue Plate Special – Southern Style Shrimp and Grits
Grits, shrimp, sausage,
The grits are fantastic, very creamy, and well seasoned. The shrimp is fine, but the well-cooked sausage adds a bit of spice.
The Blue Plate Special is seasonal and changes all the time, so the availability of this dish is unknown. However, if this is on the menu when you visit, we recommend it.
Desserts
Lemon Meringue Pie – $9
A lemon curd in a flaky pie shell topped with toasted meringue and garnished with a raspberry sauce
If you like lemon meringue, it’s great. The crust has the perfect flakiness and buttery taste, while the meringue is well-textured and delicious.
Grasshopper Bar – $8
Mint white chocolate mousse with chocolate chips on a chocolate chip cookie topped with whip cream and chocolate chips
This is fantastic. We don’t love mint desserts, but this is just the right amount. It’s complemented excellently by the milkiness of the cream on top and the thin chocolate chip cookie crust. The top layers are light, the only heaviness is the cookie, and it’s perfect.
Pineapple Upside Down Cake – $9.50
Yellow cake soaked in pineapple juice topped with caramelized pineapples and maraschino cherries garnished with whip cream and caramel sauce
The lightest cake, very airy. It has a nice light flavor, and the pineapple tastes fresh. Exactly what you expect from a pineapple upside-down cake. We’d get this again.
Dad’s Favorite Chocolate-Peanut Butter Layered Cake – $8
A fantastic, rich, chocolatey cake with an intense peanut butter flavor on the back end. It’s topped with thick, rich frosting. It also comes with two large slices and would be perfect for sharing.
Stained Glass Dessert
Whipped pineapple fluff studded with cubes of strawberry, lime, and orange gelatin
This comes with the kid’s meals. The jello tastes like jello. The whipped cream here is better than the other desserts. It’s more like a cool whip, while others are more like a spray can. Kids can choose this or ice cream. It really is just a basic jello dessert.
Overall
50’s Prime Time Cafe is a legendary staple of Hollywood Studios, just as Sci-Fi Dine-In is. Where the new menu over at the Dine-in failed to match the feel of the restaurant or “wow” us in quality, we felt the opposite with the new items here. I would dare say Prime Time is better than ever now with these additions, on top of classics such as onion rings, pot roast, meatloaf, and of course, the one-and-only peanut butter and jelly milkshake. Second only to the Hollywood Brown Derby in this park, we highly recommend you visit mom and the rest of the family soon. Oh, and keep your elbows off the tables, kids!
