Major Update on Disney Vacation Club Points Policy

A lot has been changing recently for Disney Vacation Club (DVC) members. Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort just opened new DVC Resort Studios and updated their existing DVC villas. And a whole new building is coming to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort that’s going to have even more DVC villas! But a major change just took effect recently that DVC members will want to know about.

Disney Vacation Club

The Disney Vacation Club is sort of like a timeshare in Disney World. Members buy into a point system and then use those points to “pay” for certain Disney World hotel rooms. Recently, the DVC adjusted a policy for that point system.

DVC members are given a certain number of points each year (depending on their membership) to spend at select Disney hotels. But they can also “bank” unused points to use the following year or borrow points from the next year to use earlier. That can be helpful if you won’t be visiting Disney World for one year or if you want to pay for a more expensive hotel than you can afford with one year’s worth of points.

When Disney World reopened in 2020, the policy for borrowing future points had changed: members could only borrow 50% of their available points from the upcoming year. But now the policy has changed back, and members can once again borrow 100% of points from the upcoming year!

Disney sent a notice to DVC members announcing the return of the previous policy. This change went into effect on July 12th, 2022. So now if you’re hoping to pay for an upcoming hotel stay with DVC points, you can once again use 100% of your points from the upcoming year.

Disney’s Beach Club Resort

Not all Disney World hotels have DVC rooms — some that do include the Grand Floridian, Polynesian Village Resort, Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts, Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, and others. The new Star Wars hotel, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, also accepts DVC points for guests hoping to stay there. But you may need to borrow some future points for that experience — it doesn’t come cheap!

Remember that the DVC-exclusive Top of the World lounge at Disney’s Contemporary Resort recently reopened with a new Disney villain theme! The updated spot has new eats and drinks with sinister names.
