It’s a new month, which means new limited edition ice cream flavors at Salt & Straw, and the August series is called “Veggies You Crave.”
This series includes Corn Cake Batter w/ Pralined Hazelnuts; Spinach Cake w/ Chocolate Tahini Fudge; Green Fennel & Maple; Chared Corn Curd, Cotija & Tajin; and Red Chili Curry & Markrut Lime Crispy Rice (vegan).
Spinach Cake w/ Chocolate Tahini Fudge
We were pleasantly surprised by this one, which is inspired by a classic Turkish dessert. It has golden green spinach cake with chocolate frosting, crumbled into vanilla ice cream with a homemade tahini fudge.
It’s really good. Everything flows together. You get the slightest hint of spinach but the tahini fudge is the real star of this scoop.
The vanilla ice cream acts like a glass of milk to wash down the cake. We were most nervous to try this flavor but ended up loving it.
Carrot Cake Batter W/ Pralined Hazelnuts
You can smell the carrot cake in this treat as soon as they hand it to you. It has plump, sugar-coated, and slow-roasted carrots blended into spiced ice cream.
It’s crunchy thanks to the candied hazelnuts and has a swirl of cheesecake frosting. It tastes exactly like a carrot cake.
The hazelnuts are sweet and in abundance. The spiced ice cream is creamy, delicious, and aromatic. It’s like eating carrot cake batter and tastes like fall.
We would recommend getting this if you love carrot cake or pumpkin spice lattes.
Green Fennel & Maple
This is green ice cream made from an entire fennel plant with roasted seeds and juiced leaves, then steeped in fennel pollen and sweet maple syrup.
This is very interesting. At first bite, you get a strong plant taste, but the aftertaste is sweet maple syrup. The maple syrup masks some of the veggie taste, but not all.
There’s also a subtle peppery taste to it. If you like roasted vegetables, like fennel or artichoke, you might enjoy this, but it’s not our first choice.
Charred Corn Curd, Cotija, & Tajin
This is an ode to Mexican street corn, a.k.a. elotes. Torched corn curd is ribboned through a house-made mayonnaise ice cream, with a touch of lime, tajin, and cotija cheese crumbles.
This scoop smells strongly of aged cheese. The mayo ice cream is a little tart and masks the lime flavor.
We got only a hint of tajin and corn flavoring. The cotija cheese hits a bit sour as an aftertaste. So it’s an already tart scoop with more sourness at the end, which isn’t great.
Elote is delicious and we like the idea behind this flavor, but we wish it tasted more of torched corn.
Red Chili Curry & Markrut Lime Crispy Rice
This vegan option takes notes from southeast Asian curries, with chilis, lemongrass, ginger, and spices roasted together with markrut lime and mixed into coconut cream. It’s topped with markrut lime crispy rice florentines.
It smells purely of lime. It has many flavors, which can be a lot for the palate, but it’s tasty.
Right off the bat, we got lime and coconut as the main flavors. We then got some of the chewy crunch from the crispy rice, which was similar to a rice crispy treat. The roasted spices hit at the end.
Every flavor complements the next. This wouldn’t be our first choice, but it’s still delicious.
Overall
We would rank these from best to worst as spinach cake, carrot cake, red chili curry, fennel, and corn. The spinach cake was the most surprising. Even though spinach is a bitter veggie, the ice cream was sweet and tasty.
