UPDATES Made to Construction at EPCOT’s ‘Moana’ Attraction

Things are changing at Disney World, and that’s starting with a few major construction projects happening currently.

We’ve got the TRON coaster construction in progress at Magic Kingdom, and additions being made to the Polynesian Village Resort, as well as new restaurants coming to the BoardWalk and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. But perhaps the biggest undertaking of them all is the transformation of EPCOT, and today we’re taking a closer look at the construction progress over there — and more specifically, the progress on Journey of Water — Inspired by Moana.

Many additions have been made to EPCOT recently, with the nighttime show Harmonious, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, three restaurants, a gift shop, and more. (We could seriously go on and on!) But the project continues because a large portion of the park is still under construction.

Right now, most of World Celebration (and part of World Nature) is covered in large construction walls. This area was formerly home to Innoventions, but will soon become multiple new attractions. Perhaps the most anticipated of the additions is Journey of Water — Inspired by Moana. This interactive, walk-through attraction is taking shape more and more each week, with many rock structures now constructed, and a clear path beginning to form.

We also noticed that some painting has taken place recently. When they were first constructed, the rock structures were gray, but now one section has been painted shades of brown, tan, and orange. The painting makes the rocks look more natural.

We also noticed a new theming element added this week. A large mountain-like structure has been built with the “heart of Te Fiti” symbol on the front. How cool!

It has Moana’s symbol!

And at the D23 Expo, we got our first glimpse at the giant Te Fiti that will be constructed inside the attraction. This is a scale model of what she will look like.

WOW!

But the Moana attraction isn’t the only thing getting added over here! Closer to Spaceship Earth, we’ll have new gardens and Dreamers Point — where a statue of Walt Disney will reside. (We recently got a first look at the new statue!) Not as much has been added over here yet, except a small building in the background.

Then, on the side closer to World Showcase, guests will get to visit CommuniCore Plaza and CommuniCore Hall. These two new areas will house special offerings during festivals, performance areas, and character meets. The building is coming along!

We can’t wait to see these projects completed and hopefully get some more news about their opening dates and offerings soon! Stay tuned to DFB, because we’ll update you as soon as any information is announced.

If you’re hoping to visit EPCOT soon, make sure to check out the Food & Wine Festival, which is running from now until November 19th. And if you hope to ride the new Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind coaster during your visit, brush up on our tips for securing a boarding group or using the My Disney Experience app to buy a Lightning Lane pass!
