Today Cafe in Universal Studios Florida is serving up a series of fun holiday desserts for the Christmas season. We reviewed their first round of treats and decided what belonged on the nice list — and what was naughty.
Orange Cranberry 3-Tier Mini Cake – $6.49
This gets bonus points for beauty, but it’s what’s within that truly counts. And this one has a whole lot of cranberry.
Each bite was full of cranberries, like lumps of coal ruining Christmas morning. There are just more and more cranberries as you dig deeper into the dessert.
There are enough cranberries packed into this cake to feed a family on Thanksgiving. They’re tart and really chewy and just ruin the beauty of the orange mousse.
If this had just been the orange mousse, it would have been one of our favorites. The orange is absolutely delicious and we did our best to dig out the cranberries to enjoy the orange mousse.
The white chocolate snowflakes melt in your mouth like real snowflakes. It’s a shame the cranberries put this on the naughty list because it had a lot of redeeming qualities.
Peppermint Cheesecake Pop – $5.49
This dessert is cute but did not make the nice list.
The cheesecake texture is slightly off and the taste is kind of bland. It’s almost like eating cheesecake after brushing your teeth.
The peppermint flavor is light and does pair well with the mild vanilla of the cheesecake, but it just doesn’t hit the mark.
The layer of sprinkles usually adds some crunch, but these were a bit soggy and did nothing to help the dessert. Another one for the naughty list.
Eggnog Igloo
This is an absolutely adorable igloo-shaped mousse, accented by a tiny white chocolate snowflake.
It’s cold and creamy with a thick consistency. The flavor tastes just like eggnog.
The spice is there, and it’s surprisingly spot on to actual eggnog. Nice list.
Linzer Cake
This is another dessert that didn’t make the nice list, but the flavors might appeal to somebody.
The raspberry jam is tart and sweet and there are bits of sliced nuts that add a texture to the cake. The cake was dry and the spice flavor just did not appeal to us.
Even the tiny cookie on top was soggy and tasteless.
Krampus is coming for Today Cafe if we keep going this way.
Pecan Pie Cake – $6.49
You know when Scrooge changes at the end of the story? This cake might be why. It was beyond amazing and might be one of the best holiday treats at the park.
The cake is fantastic with a creamy cinnamon frosting.
With its rich cinnamon flavor, it is a bit like a coffee cake. If you’re a fan of the amazing cinnamon cake they have during Mardi Gras, this is almost the same concept, with a decadent layer of caramel and pecans in the middle.
The dark chocolate pine cone on top is adorable and delicious.
This cake redeems Today Cafe this year.
