Universal’s theme park business is expanding.

Not only is Super Nintendo World opening soon in Universal Studios Hollywood, but Universal Studios Florida is getting a third theme park, Epic Universe. But that’s not all. Universal has plans to CONTINUE building more theme parks across the U.S. AND throughout the world and is spending HUGE amounts of money to do it.

Universal recently announced plans to build parks in both Texas and Las Vegas. In Texas, “the company plans to build a family-focused resort aimed specifically at younger kids on 97 acres of land it’s acquired in the Dallas suburb of Frisco, Texas. It will include rides, shows, and a hotel, as well as character meet and greets tied to the company’s library of film and TV properties, which include Minions and Shrek.”

The company also announced plans for a year-round horror-based location in Las Vegas. The location will be an expansion of Vegas’ Area15 entertainment district. Basically, the idea is like Universals Halloween Horror Nights, but it will be available throughout the year.

According to The Orlando Sentinel, NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell commented that smaller locations like the ones in Texas and Las Vegas “could be the prototypes for future ventures.” Because these locations will be smaller and cheaper to build, it could make them a good fit for other locations around the world.

He said, “We definitely have our eye towards places expanding internationally, not just domestically, with a number of markets kind of on the docket, and they won’t all be places for a big, giant, primary theme park. Or you might look at different concepts for different markets.”

According to a recent earnings call, Comcast President Mike Cavanagh said that Universal plans to increase theme park spending by $1.2 billion in 2023 from what was spent in 2022. That money will go toward the construction of Epic Universe in Orlando, as well as the Texas and Las Vegas parks.
