A new report from Variety regarding the future of “Star Wars” on the big screen reveals that the Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins “Star Wars” films have been shelved. Taika Waititi and Rian Johnson both show promise for future projects, but it appears Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy may be the next filmmaker to deliver a “Star Wars” film.
“Star Wars: Rogue Squadron,” directed by Patty Jenkins, was originally slated for a Christmas 2023 release, but was delayed and then removed from Disney’s release schedule entirely. Jenkins said in December that she was still developing “Rogue Squadron” but Variety’s source with knowledge of the production says it is no longer in active development at Lucasfilm.
It was announced in 2019 that Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige would also be making a new “Star Wars” film. He even brought on screenwriter Michael Waldron as of May 2022. It would seem this film is also no longer in active development, but Feige and Waldron are both busy with ongoing Marvel projects.
As Feige and Jenkins focus on projects within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars fans may be able to look to past filmmakers for the next glimpse into a galaxy far, far away. Rian Johnson, the filmmaker behind “The Last Jedi”, has shared that he still hopes to make a new “Star Wars” trilogy, which he originally announced before the 2017 release of “The Last Jedi”. His current workload consists of a continuation of popular Benoit Blanc movies (“Knives Out,” “Glass Onion”) for Netflix and the “Poker Face” series on Peacock.
Taika Waititi, the filmmaker behind “Thor: Love and Thunder”, is continuing his project. Waititi continues to work on his possible “Star Wars” feature and Variety’s sources say the filmmaker is likely to appear in it, as well, which is not unusual for the director. The project was originally projected to wrap this year, but Waititi shared last summer that the film was on hold as he worked on the HBO Max series “Our Flag Means Death.” Back in June, Waititi said, “I’m still trying to figure out what the story is.”
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is also set to direct a “Star Wars” film and may be the most likely filmmaker to bring the next film of the franchise to the big screen. Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and Justin Britt-Gibson (“Counterpart”) were brought on as screenwriters for the project this past fall, making this film a real contender for a projected December 2025 release date. It has not yet been confirmed by LucasFilm.
