Mickey’s PhilharMagic Reopens with New Seating & HVAC at Disney California Adventure

After a six week refurbishment, Mickey’s PhilharMagic reopened to guests at Disney California Adventure this week with a few cosmetic changes to the show space, so we stopped in to take a look at the newest changes.

Mickey's PhilharMagic

Mickey’s PhilharMagic at Disney California Adventure closed for refurbishment on January 23, 2023. Following its reopening, the seating within has been replaced and reupholstered with new fabric seats.

Theater Seating

The new plastic seating replaces the former metal seating, which had patterns on each of the seats prior to the closing.

The new seats have a more warm red velvet option that gives the theater a classic look. However, now with less theming to the rows of theater seats.

HVAC Unit Installed

Another new detail we noticed was the addition of this HVAC vent unit in the preshow lobby that had not previously been visible to guests.

This new unit in the corner of the lobby was not in this location before the closed refurbishment. Although the duct has been painted to match the trim of the room, it does stand out as it protrudes from the wall and has a large intake grate over the bottom half. The duct work goes up the interior wall, then proceeds to extend across the ceiling.

This may have been added to the preshow area to help with air circulation and filtration, a concern which has spread after the pandemic. Considering its prominence and lack of theming, it can easily be spotted by any guest waiting for the next show.

Disney California Adventure Refurbishment

These refurbishments come to Mickey’s PhilharMagic come along with several other projects that are currently underway or recently refurbished at Disney California Adventure Park.

Work has begun on the Pacific Wharf area of the park, as it prepares to become San Fransokyo Square, themed after the fictional city from the movie Big Hero 6. The city in the film is a mix of San Francisco, California, and Tokyo, Japan. The process of repainting and preparing the bridge to be transformed to match the theme of the new area. Repainting it from its previous color to international orange, and the new look will feature torii gate-like towers on either end of the bridge which can be seen in the concept art Disney shared.

Along with this update, the entire Pacific Wharf area is currently transforming into San Fransokyo Square, and will have restaurants, a beer garden, and include a new greeting location for Baymax once open to guests.

Other attractions within the park such as Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind closed in January of 2023 for a refurbishment, and Silly Symphony Swings has also been closed for a scheduled refurbishment and currently remains closed with no reopening date.
