We’ve probably all heard the saying, “A rainy day at Disney, is better than a day at home,” but is it true?

If you were headed to Magic Kingdom this morning, you may have been in for quite the shock if you checked the My Disney Experience app wait times to line up your next Lightning Lane. Check out what we saw!

We recently set out for a day of adventure at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World and got quite the shock before entering the park. The weather was a bit yucky as it had been raining but if we hadn’t checked the My Disney Experience app we wouldn’t have seen so many rides close!

Well, that certainly could put a damper on things (pun intended) if you didn’t realize all these attractions were closed as you were planning your day out. Most of the rides with closures were ones that would be obvious choices to need to close with inclement weather like Astro Orbiter, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and even Jungle Cruise. 

As we scrolled there were even more closed including transportation attractions like the Walt Disney World Railroad and its boarding stations. From time to time, Disney will make decisions to close experiences for your safety and the safety of Cast Members working these attractions. While it might be a disappointing find, you can bet there’s solid reasoning behind being safe.

So how would this affect you and your day at Magic Kingdom? First, for the attractions that are still open and mostly indoors, expect an uptick in those wait times and even for a bit after the closed attractions reopen. It will take some time for the lines to subside and for the crowds to disperse if the weather improves. Also, it’s a great time to re-evaluate your plans for the day; maybe this gives you the perfect excuse to try out a new snack or restaurant. If you haven’t already checked into using Genie+ for your day, this is going to be a very important time to grab those Lightning Lanes!

We also want to stress the importance of caution as Disney will also have expectations of guests to use reasonable judgment and walk slowly from place to place. This will be especially important walking indoors (especially those shops) where you may encounter a slick floor.

If you’ve forgotten to bring along a poncho, rain jacket, or umbrella, visit the nearest shop. They’re very prepared for rainy weather and can swiftly get you back about your park day after you’ve picked up a few ponchos!
