Disney has been part of a massive political fight, and we’ve all been watching it unfold. The next part of this saga has arrived, and it’s time to fly into the facts. Disney’s “no-fly-zone” is being put into question and is being challenged by Republican congress members. Before we dissect all that has been said, let’s have a short history lesson.
The History of the No-Fly-Zone at Disney Parks
In the wake of 9/11, no-fly zones were created in Walt Disney World and Disneyland. The parks worked with the federal government to designate these zones. The reasoning was to increase park safety for guests visiting, especially since there was considerable concern that more attacks toward America could happen again via aircraft. All of that makes total sense since theme parks are an easy target due to how many people are in there at a time.
Why Are These Zones Being Looked at Now?
Congressman Troy Nehls, on May 5th, reintroduced the Airlines Independent of Restrictions (AIR) Act. This bill would redirect the Secretary of Transportation to remove the two “no-fly-zone” Notices to Air Missions over Disneyland and Disney World. Let’s look at a few quotes from Nehls regarding the issue.
“I’m proud to reintroduce my bill, the Airlines Independent of Restrictions (AIR) Act, in the 118th Congress to revoke Disney’s special no-fly zone privileges,” said Congressman Nehls. “Theme parks like Disney should not receive special treatment just because they are well-connected. Our national security should not be compromised to fit the needs of one corporation.”
The following quote comes from Congresswoman Boebert, who is co-sponsoring the bill.
“Woke corporations shouldn’t get any favors from the government,” said Congresswoman Boebert. “The FAA has no business granting a no-fly-zone over Disney parks. Universal Studios, Hershey Park, Six Flags, and other theme parks don’t have no-fly-zones over them, and it’s time for Disney to get the same treatment. No corporation should get preferential treatment from the government—especially when it is grooming children. Go woke, go broke.”
This next quote comes from Congressman LaMalfa, one of the co-sponsors.
“Congress delegated ‘no fly zone’ authority to the FAA for high security institutions such as the White House, military bases, or hazards like wildfires and hurricanes,” said Congressman LaMalfa. “Preferential treatment of one corporation over competitors is not a legitimate use of a no fly zone and it’s time to disband this unfair practice.”
