A cinematic trailer for the first formally open-world Star Wars game in history was released during the 2023 Xbox Showcase today. The game is called Star Wars Outlaws, taking place during the era of the Galactic Empire, but focusing more on the criminal underworld operating in the shadows of society. The trailer is available below.
A Star Wars Open World
Experience the first-ever open world Star Wars game, set between the events of ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi.’ Explore distinct planets across the galaxy, both iconic and new. Risk it all as Kay Vess, an emerging scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life, along with her companion Nix. Fight, steal, and outwit your way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates as you join the galaxy’s most wanted.
When Star Wars games are received well, they usually contribute qualitative stories to the lore of the universe, sometimes surpassing the stories of some of the films to various fans, and they usually find their way into the Disney parks.
EA and Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi series has garnered critical and commercial notoriety recently, following the adventures of Cal Kestis as he rebels against the Empire with the added dangers of him being one of the few surviving Jedi in the galaxy. Due to the popularity of the games and their influence on the Star Wars fandom at-large, his own Legacy Lightsaber has debuted in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, along with toys based on his droid companion — BD-1.
If this new open-world game manages to find its own dedicated group of supporters and positive feedback, it’s very likely we could see its characters, stories, and environments make appearances in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World.
About the Game’s Creators
French video game publisher Ubisoft and Swedish developer Massive Entertainment are the forces behind this new project.
Ubisoft’s recent published titles include Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, Far Cry 6, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage. The Assassin’s Creed franchise is no stranger to sprawling open worlds with detail and depth, which bodes well for the prospects of Star Wars Outlaws.
Massive Entertainment has created such games as Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, Far Cry 3, Tom Clancy’s The Division, and is currently working on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora — a highly-anticipated but much-delayed game based on the James Cameron franchise of films that inspired a themed land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
No actual gameplay footage was unveiled with this announcement, though the wait will be extremely short, as Ubisoft plans to show off the game’s functionality tomorrow at their Ubisoft Forward event in Los Angeles. The publisher notably pulled out of the massive video game industry trade event E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) to do their own independent showcase.
Star Wars Outlaws is set to be released sometime in 2024.
