After heated negotiations earlier in the year, a meeting in May saw 80% of the Reedy Creek Fire Department’s 185 staff members sign off on a new three-year labor deal. The agreed-upon contract was due to be voted on officially during a meeting last month with the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board of Supervisors; however, the item was never called. In a further twist, the topic has not been noted on the agenda for the next meeting on the calendar for Wednesday.
According to an article from the Associated Press, there is a new district administrator who has reopened negotiations on the previously agreed contract. The firefighters’ union was one of the few bodies looking forward to the appointment of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board, publicly airing grievances they had with the prior governing body. The delay in approving the new contract may disrupt the progress made so far.
Board spokesperson Alexei Woltornist said negotiations with the union were continuing, without explaining why they were reopened with a contract already approved by the firefighters and first responders.
