New ‘Kong – The 8th Wonder of the World’ Collectible Medallion Debuts at Universal Orlando Resort

A new King Kong collectible medallion has arrived at Universal Orlando Resort, and we recently spotted it in CityWalk.

Collectible medallions are becoming a very popular souvenir lately and Universal Orlando has a few different machines across the resort for them.

The machine that’s located inside the Legacy Store pays tribute to “E.T.,” “Jaws,” “Back to the Future,” and “King Kong” with 4 unique designs. A new design has arrived at the machine, replacing the old Kong medallion with one that honors the former opening day Kongfrontation attraction that once occupied Universal Studios Florida from 1990 to 2002. Its space is now occupied by Revenge of the Mummy.

The front side of the medallion shows Kong reaching out towards a suspended tram car as he did in the attraction. “Kong – The 8th Wonder of the World” is written around the edges of the gold-colored medallion. The back of the coin shows the retro Universal Studios Florida logo along with some stars at the top.

The idea of collectible medallions is similar to pressed penny machines, but the coins are a better size. The quality of these souvenirs is better, but the price is also a bit higher. They are $5 each if you want just one, but you can get all 4 designs for $15.

The Back to the Future and E.T. designs were recently updated, so it seems like Jaws might be due for a change sometime soon, too. You can also find collectible medallion machines in the Jurassic Park Tribute Store for the summer, Jurassic Outfitters, and the Transformers-themed Supply Vault.

The Universal Legacy Store is located in CityWalk and is filled with amazing props and pieces of theme park history. There’s even a model of scenes from the Kongfrontation attraction. We’ve seen the designs occasionally change in this machine — previously, the medallion featured a gorilla standing alone. You can see all of the original medallions in our post here.
