You know about McDonald’s, their famous fries, their popular Big Mac sandwich, and even the viral Grimace shake — but have you heard about CosMc’s? Soon, you will!

We’ve shared all kinds of McDonald’s updates lately — from new menu items to special Happy Meal Toys — but this news might really surprise you!

According to CNN Business, McDonald’s has revealed that they’ll be testing out a NEW restaurant concept called CosMc’s!

True McDonald’s experts might recognize that as the name of a retro McDonald’s character. CNBC points out that the character CosMc appeared in McDonald’s ads in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He’s an alien that craves McDonald’s food.

During a call about McDonald’s second-quarter financial results, CEO Chris Kempczinski said, “CosMc’s is a small format concept with all the DNA of McDonald’s but its own unique personality.”

More details are set to be revealed at McDonald’s investor day at the end of 2023. The plan, for now, is that McDonald’s will test the concept in a few locations in 2024. According to CNBC, the testing will be at a handful of spots in a “limited geography” in early 2024. It seems this may be focused in areas where McDonald’s doesn’t have as big of a presence, relative to the population.

But CosMc’s might not be the only new restaurant concept McDonald’s is looking at. According to CNN Business, McDonald’s is planning new types of locations, which include CosMc’s and “other opportunities for small-format stores.” 

CEO Kempczinski shared that McDonald’s is looking at smaller format stores — ones that wouldn’t require as much space for dining at the location — especially since delivery is such a popular option now.

CNN points out that McDonald’s has tested smaller restaurant concepts in the past — like McDonald’s Express — but it’s not totally clear if CosMc’s will be similar.

We’ve also seen the brand test out a new store concept where food is cooked, packaged, and delivered to diners by robots.

It seems one potential reason for the revitalization of the CosMc character, in particular, is due to the success of the Grimace shake, the reappearance of that character, and the viral trend that surrounded his return.

CEO Kempczinski said, “This quarter, the theme is — well, if I’m being honest, the theme was Grimace…Grimace has been everywhere in the past few months…this viral phenomenon is yet another proof point of the power of marketing at McDonald’s today.”
