Last Friday, Disney released the news that many Haunted Mansion fans have been waiting for; The Hatbox Ghost is on its way! However, over the weekend, it seems that excitement has turned to confusion as fans are questioning the placement choice of this long-awaited figure. The Instagram announcement came with a puzzling detail about where the new character would be materializing in the Haunted Mansion attraction:
Later this year at the @WaltDisneyWorld Resort, one of our most iconic specters will set up residence in the Haunted Mansion of Liberty Square in Magic Kingdom Park. The Hatbox Ghost will appear to guests as they pass the Endless Hallway, welcoming himself inside from the swinging wake in the cemetery and grinning at the Doom Buggies as they set off deeper into the mansion. Guests will soon see temporary barriers materialize as we await his apparition.
Instantly, fans questioned the decision, drawing on the attractions’ own storyline to support their concerns. You see, as you journey through the spooky ride, it’s only after you meet Madame Leota, who awakens the spirits, that you encounter the happy haunts that then materialize. The question is being asked, why would the Hatbox Ghost appear before the spirits are called? It’s a fair question and one that hasn’t yet received a solid answer.
Could this be the first of several changes in line with the recently released film that ultimately change the attraction’s narrative? Clearly, the placement in the Endless Hallway has more to do with the released scene from the film, but how will it relate back to the storyline of the attraction?
