A new “Toy Story” light-up projection game available at Walt Disney World is inspired by Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin — although the packaging doesn’t say so. We found it in World of Disney at Disney Springs.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Light-Up Projection Game – $39.99
The set includes batteries and is for ages 3+. There are two pieces: Zurg’s spider-like spaceship with Zurg sticking out of the top and a blaster inspired by the ones guests use on the ride.
The spaceship is orange with green, yellow, and blue accents. A saw and a claw stick out of the sides and Zurg has his three-barreled blaster on his arm. A “Z” icon is on the front of the spaceship and it comes on a blue base.
The blaster is blue with a green barrel around a red orb.
Zurg spins during the multi-speed game.
The spaceship projects different aliens and robots from the ride that users can shoot with the included blaster.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
A version of this attraction has existed at every Disney Resort, but the name often varies:
- Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom
- Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters at Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland (and previously Hong Kong Disneyland)
- Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast at Disneyland Paris
- Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue at Shanghai Disneyland
The original opened at Magic Kingdom on November 3, 1998. Though inspired by the opening sequence of “Toy Story 2,” the ride opened a year before the film was released.
It’s an Omnimover shooting dark ride and replaced If You Had Wings / Delta Dreamflight / Take Flight in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland, utilizing the same track but with completely different theming. All versions of the ride have guests joining forces with Buzz Lightyear to stop Zurg from stealing batteries.
The second version opened in Tokyo Disneyland in 2004, followed by the California and Hong Kong versions in 2005 and the Paris version in 2006. It was an opening day attraction at Shanghai Disneyland in 2016. Before the Hong Kong Disneyland version closed the next year, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin was one of only two attractions that operated at every Disney castle park in the world.
The other attraction, which is still operating at all the parks and was an opening day attraction for all but the original, is Dumbo the Flying Elephant (it opened a month late at Disneyland in August 1955).
