A Disneyland Paris Cast Member who participated in this summer’s strike was unexpectedly fired this week over waffle toppings.
Disneyland Paris Cast Members were striking in May and June, requesting wage increases to match inflation and quality of life improvements in their working conditions. The strike led to multiple parade and fireworks cancellations. French strike rules even allowed Cast Members to march through the parks. The strikes have paused for now, but are set to resume in September.
20-year-old Loris Taboureau was among the hundreds of Cast Members who went on strike at that time. After a year of working at Disneyland Paris, Taboureau was unexpectedly let go on August 14, Le Parisien reports.
Taboureau’s dismissal letter points to an incident on June 26 as the reason for his firing. On that day, Taboureau worked at Les Chariots Gourmands, a food stand that sells waffles with various toppings. At around 4:55 p.m., guests asked for a serving of waffles with both whipped cream and Nutella. Taboureau told them that they had to choose one of the two toppings, a standard policy at the stand.
The guests later complained about Taboureau’s tone to Disneyland Paris customer service, describing him as “nonchalant” (which has a more negative connotation in the original French).
Taboureau notes that had he given them both toppings, other guests in line would have expected the same special treatment, and he would have been in trouble for going against the menu.
He also pointed out that he had received compliments from guests before, but this was his first known complaint, making it even more unusual that he be fired over it. He said that, usually, this would result in a reminder or a temporary suspension.
Taboureau believes his firing is partially due to his involvement in the strikes. His name and photograph were previously published by Le Monde in an article about a strike on June 7.
“I’m upset,” Taboureau told Le Parisien (translated). “It’s a company in which I liked to work and to which I dedicated my days for a year. The only time I failed to bring the magic to life, I was immediately fired.”
Le Parisien also previously reported on five Cast Members who had blocked an early June performance of “Disney Dreams!”, leading to the fireworks being canceled. The five were suspended and summoned for meetings regarding their possible dismissal. No reason was given for their suspensions prior to the meetings.
One of these Cast Members said it was clear to them that this was due to their participation in the strike and that it was a warning to other Cast Members planning on striking later this year.
