Will Disney+ Crack Down on Password Sharing in the U.S.? We Just Got a MAJOR Hint!

With looming changes on the horizon, Disney is always gauging its consumers and making adjustments accordingly.

Disney periodically sends out surveys, and we recently received a survey/census that may be hinting at future Disney developments!

This new survey hints at possible changes to the Disney+ streaming platform. Disney recently began its password-sharing crackdown, and this new survey may be in conjunction with that.

Within this recent survey, Disney asks which streaming services you currently have and who the primary account holder is for each service.

During its Q3 Earnings Call earlier this year, Disney announced they are rolling out a new strategic plan revolving around pricing, marketing, and content. Part of that plan was to limit account sharing. We’ve already begun to see this happen in other parts of the world, so as this begins going into effect stateside, it’s easy to see why Disney would take the temperature (so to speak) of its user base right now.

These questions come just before the password-sharing crackdown is expected to hit the United States. According to The Hollywood ReporterDisney will “launch its password-sharing deterrents in Canada on Nov. 1, 2023.” Disney+ subscribers are likely to see the same crackdown in the U.S. later this year or in early 2024.

Disney+ subscribers in Canada have been receiving emails that notify them of new account-sharing rules. Disney’s goal is to keep the streaming platform within primary households, according to a Disney spokesperson.

The email states, “Unless otherwise permitted by your service tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household. We may, in our sole discretion, analyze the use of your account to determine compliance with this agreement. If we determine that you have violated this agreement, we may limit or terminate access to the service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this agreement.”

Don’t forget that Disney also recently raised prices for Disney+ and Hulu in the U.S., presumably in the hopes that subscribers will move to the ad-supported tiers, which drives up advertiser revenue. The ad-free tier of Disney+ rose to $13.99 per month (starting on October 12th, 2023), but the ad-supported tier remains the same price as before. Similarly, they raised the cost of Hulu without commercials to $17.99 per month — but the ad-supported version remains at its current price.

All in all, this survey could be part of a larger evolution for the Walt Disney Company or it could simply be just another example of Disney getting in touch with its customers to make necessary minor adjustments. Follow us at DFB for all the latest Disney news, trends, and topics!
