3 NEW Clues That EPCOT’s Canceled Project May Make a Comeback

When it comes to formerly-announced and upcoming Disney World projects, it can be hard to keep up.

Play! Pavilion (behind Mission: SPACE gift shop)

The Play! Pavilion in EPCOT was set to arrive before the 50th Anniversary Celebration at Disney World, but was never completed. The interactive play area was set to reside inside the Wonders of Life Pavilion behind the Mission: SPACE gift shop. The “digital metropolis” was going to feature interactive experiences, games, entertainment, hands-on activities… AND favorite Disney characters, both virtual and real. However, in early 2023, after the experience hadn’t opened after three years, it disappeared off the park map entirely. Now, though, we think it could make a comeback…

Disney held its quarter 1 earnings call for fiscal 2023 on February 7th, and we learned that Disney and the creators of Fortnite, Epic Games, would be collaborating to bring more Disney experiences to the online gaming platform. The $1.5 billion investment collaboration is meant to build out a Disney universe that will be for gameplay, entertainment, AND shopping, and according to Disney, “represents our biggest foray into the game space ever.”

This got shareholders thinkin’ a bit, though. If Disney is coming to Fortnite, will Fortnite come to Disney? We totally think it could. And we think it could happen in the former Play! Pavilion. Here’s why.

Before Disney shared its upcoming collaboration with Epic Games, they announced Holo Tile technology. Disney describes the Holo Tile floor technology as the “world’s first multi-person, omni-directional, modular, expandable, treadmill floor.” Basically, all those tiny tiles you see rotate and move to keep any object in the center of the floor. What’s more, MULTIPLE people can be on the floor moving in different directions simultaneously.

Basically, this could allow virtual reality games and experiences to feel even more like reality. It will allow you to physically MOVE through the experience and to sort of trick your brain into thinking that you’re movin’ and groovin’ along with what you see in a VR headset or on a screen.

Are you following? Okay, great. Next, let’s talk about Disney’s collaboration with Apple for the Apple Vision Pro headset that was just released. Disney announced on January 16th that “fans will be able to experience Disney’s iconic stories like never before with Disney+ on Apple Vision Pro, Apple’s revolutionary spatial computer, offering Disney+ subscribers with a Vision Pro device a new way to stream entertainment at no additional cost.” If you can do that at home, what would you be able to do with similar technology at a Disney Park?

Okay, so I think we’re now up to speed. So. WHAT IF: Disney put Holo Tile technology in the Play! Pavilion, partnered with Apple to bring Apple Vision Pro to the Pavilion, allowed Holo Tile and the VR headset to work together, and THEN visitors could explore the all-new Fortnite realm with said technology? Is your brain exploding? Ours, too.
