Listen, we know some folks are afraid to fly, but we have to admit we never expected to have to worry about this airplane problem.
If you’re planning on flying soon, we don’t mean to alarm you, but we definitely have a new fear when it comes to flying (and no, it’s not one of the doors flying off, although that’s up there, too). It’s maggots.
According to Fox Business, a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit went terribly wrong and had to turn around an hour into the flight after MAGGOTS FELL ONTO PASSENGERS from an overhead bin. Does this type of terror sound familiar to anyone? Maybe a certain 2006 film that would fit if you replaced the word “maggots” with “snakes?” No? Okay, moving on.
Yes, you unfortunately read that right. On Delta Flight DL133, a suitcase containing rotten fish (WHO let that through security? WHO?!) burst open in the overhead bin during the flight and dropped MAGGOTS onto the passengers in Economy seats below.
When the plane landed and all passengers had exited, the cabin was cleaned thoroughly, and the suitcase was put into a bag to be burned (as it deserves to be). But what about the owner of the suitcase, you ask? Don’t worry — they were identified on the plane and detained after all other passengers had disembarked. However, it’s unclear if any action was taken against the passenger.
Those who had been given new, unending nightmares by the maggots were given “8,000 air miles, hotel room compensation and a $30 meal ticket” if they were going to be delayed overnight. A few travelers have chimed in online to share their experience on the flight, one of them sharing they were in the row directly in front of the maggots, and the poor woman underneath them told the Flight Attendant they were falling on her head. The commenter shared that she could see them wiggling around on the seat.
Now we can’t get that mental image out of our own minds, and we’re sure you’re in the same boat, our bad, but we have SO MANY QUESTIONS! Was the fish already bad before being put in the bag? How long was it in the bag? WHY WAS IT IN THE BAG IN THE FIRST PLACE (especially wrapped in newspaper, according to one of the passengers on board)? How was the suitcase so full it BURST open during the flight?
Unfortunately (or fortunately? We don’t really know), we’ll likely never know the answer to these questions, but you know those wild questions you ask yourself right before you go through security? Like, “what if I packed a weapon I don’t own?” or “what if someone snuck something into my bag that’s been right next to me this whole time?” Now we have another question to add and ponder over — “Did I pack some raw fish that I don’t own and haven’t properly stored and it’ll drop maggots over everyone like that other flight?” It will haunt us forever, and we weren’t even THERE.
