According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel and DeMayo parted ways early last week. Cast and crew were told DeMayo was no longer working on the project. DeMayo’s company email was deactivated and his Instagram account was deleted.
Marvel had no comment. DeMayo and his representatives did not return THR’s calls and emails for comment.
While the 10-episode first season of “X-Men ’97” is complete and poised to debut on March 20, DeMayo won’t be promoting it or working on any future seasons. He was previously scheduled to attend the show’s premiere in Hollywood on March 13 and was discussing ideas for a third season with his team.
DeMayo has talked about identifying with the X-Men as a gay Black man adopted by white parents with a Korean sister in the South. He was a fan of the original 1990s animated series that “X-Men ’97” continues.
Anyone who feels different, we all have a Magneto inside of us, and we all have a Charles Xavier. We all have a part of us that wants to burn it all down, and there’s a part of us who wants to find the compromise and build it up. And those comics really helped me understand my identity.

DeMayo previously wrote for “Moon Knight” and early drafts of Marvel’s upcoming “Blade” film.
