It also blows past the $3.7 million the original “Inside Out” brought in during previews. The 2015 film reached $90.4 million domestically in its opening weekend. The sequel is projected to make between $80 million and $90 million domestically, and as much as $135 million internationally this weekend. (via Deadline)
It could become the year’s biggest box office hit, surpassing “Dune: Part Two” with $82.5 million and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” with $80 million.
“Inside Out 2” made $5.7 million in Mexico, the country’s third-highest opening day for an animated film in history. In Argentina, it hit second place behind “Toy Story 4.”
“Inside Out” ultimately grossed $356 million in Canada and the U.S. It made $858.8 million globally.
The success of “Inside Out 2” will pave the way for Pixar’s future with more sequels and spin-offs on the horizon. The studio has been struggling to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. “Onward” was released in March 2020, days before lockdowns hit the U.S. “Soul” and “Luca” were released exclusively to Disney+, and “Turning Red” had a limited theatrical release alongside a Disney+ release. They were followed by “Lightyear” with a $50.5 million opening and “Elemental” with just $29.6 million.
“Inside Out 2” is currently certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 93 percent critics’ score and 95 percent audience score. Watch the final trailer below.
