Just So You Know, Nobody Else Knows What They’re Doing Either

Disney Food Blog is 15 years old!

The Key Lime Pie Sundae

Doing what I do for 15 years has been full of surprises, learning, and flat-out confusion. And I get asked all the time if I have any advice for people who are starting out as content creators, or bloggers, or writers, or photographers, or some other creative or entrepreneural endeavor.

What do you do when there’s a nearly 3-month gap between the EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival and the EPCOT Food & Wine Festival? You throw yourself a big old DFB Mega Fest! 🌟 We’ve got loads of giveaways, behind the scenes content, and untold crazy stories from AJ Wolfe and the DFB team. Come celebrate DFB Mega Fest with us!

So, let me shout from the rooftops this truth: “Nobody else knows what they’re doing either.”

Bacon Mac and Cheese Hot Dog

Anytime you start something new — a class, a job, a relationship — there’s always fear and anxiety that you’re going to do it wrong, that other people know how to do it better, that you’ll fail. One thing I’ve learned through the last 15 years is that — no matter what people post on social media, or say in their dating profile, or talk about in work meetings — everyone is usually some combination of anxious, or scared, or unsure, and they’re trying to hide it.

When I started DFB — and up until this very day — it’s been trial and error. “Will this be something people want to read?” “Is this helpful enough?” “Does anyone really care about this?” “Is this going to totally bomb?” We keep trying, we keep changing, and we keep learning.

Minnie Mouse Cupcake

Since the world of media is ever-changing — and always has been — we knew when we started this that we were signing up for having to re-think and re-vamp our game plan regularly. Sometimes monthly, sometimes daily. We knew that this would always be two steps forward, one step back.

And while that’s terrifying, it’s also energizing. But if you’re spending all your time wondering what other people will think about your mistakes, your failures, and your “not good enoughs”, then you’re not taking the chances you need to take to learn more, and to provide more value to your audience.

So a good rule of thumb — whether you’re starting a blog, a family, a new job, or a whole new life — is to give yourself grace and time to learn and make mistakes. You don’t have to share them with the world, but here’s hoping that when things do go “egg-shaped” as they say in old-timey novels, you take that as an opportunity instead of a condemnation.
