The refurbishment project began in February but the ride has remained open during the work. Horses were periodically roped off for the flooring to be replaced. Most work, however, was on the frieze sculptures around the top of the carousel, which were repainted.

The pink, purple, and blue paint over the angelic carvings is now more vivid. Gold foil on the borders of the “Cinderella” images has been refreshed and looks extra shiny. The lightbulbs were likely also replaced.

The paint on some of the sculpted figures looks like it may be incomplete. Some of the colors look the same as the base. However, this could also just be a design choice.

The ride now known as Prince Charming Regal Carrousel was built by The Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1917. It was originally called The Liberty Carousel. Disney purchased it in 1967 and updated it with “Cinderella” details. It opened with Magic Kingdom in 1971 as Cinderella’s Golden Carousel. It was renamed in 2010.

According to the backstory of Prince Charming Regal Carrousel, the prince built a training device of carved horses for jousting in the countryside near the castle. Villagers were so enamored by the “carrousel” that he had a second built close to the castle for everyone to enjoy.

The “Cinderella” images around the top of the carousel are from key moments of the animated film, telling the story of the Disney Princess. One horse with a golden bow on its tail is said to be Cinderella’s, but this is just a fan theory.
