Our Experience With Hurricane Milton in Orlando, Florida: Before, During & After the Storm

Living in Florida means that hurricanes are a part of life, and this time we faced Hurricane Milton. We spent several days preparing for the storm and bracing ourselves for whatever it might bring. In this blog, we’ll walk you through the experience, from the calm before the storm to the tense moments when tornado warnings flashed on our phones. We’ll also share how we kept the kids entertained and stayed safe indoors while the wind and rain pounded outside.

Before the Storm

We started our day by prepping the house, making sure we were as ready as possible. The kids were excited about having a few days off school, but we explained that a hurricane was coming, so they needed to be prepared for some changes. While the weather was relatively calm in the morning, we knew that the worst was yet to come later in the day. A key part of preparing for a storm in Florida is making sure your house is secure and you have enough food and activities to keep everyone busy, especially young children.

During the Storm

As the hours passed, the rain started to pick up, and the wind became stronger. While we stayed inside, the kids kept busy with games and movies. We even made some sugar cookies to keep spirits high. Meanwhile, the weather outside took a turn. Tornado warnings kept popping up on our phones, adding a layer of tension to the day. We managed to avoid the worst of the storm, but we could hear the wind howling through the night, making it hard to sleep.

After the Storm

When morning arrived, we were relieved to see that our home had survived without any major damage. A few fallen branches and leaves were scattered around the yard, but thankfully, that was the worst of it. We took a walk around the neighborhood and saw that other homes had similar minimal damage. After the storm cleared, we began the process of cleaning up, grateful for how well we had come through.

Hurricane Milton wasn’t as destructive as it could have been, but it was a stark reminder of how unpredictable Florida weather can be. We’re thankful for our safety and are keeping those who were more affected in our thoughts.
