Construction has begun on the Grand Floridian gingerbread house at Walt Disney World, with the bakery team placing the first shingles on Tuesday morning.
Grand Floridian Gingerbread House
When we visited Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa on Monday, October 28, protective panels had been placed on the floor where the gingerbread house would go.
The next morning, the framework for the Victorian-style house was in place. The framework will eventually be covered in gingerbread and other sweets. The gingerbread house is at one end of the Grand Floridian’s lobby.
Right now, it’s surrounded by ladders and platforms for Cast Members to reach the top of the house. It’s not life-size, but it is large enough for a person to enter. Once complete, Cast Members will sell sweets and gifts out of the house.
A sign in front of the barriers advertises the gingerbread house as “coming soon!” An opening date has not been announced for this or other Walt Disney World Resort hotel gingerbread houses.
We saw construction crew members finishing up the framework from inside and out.
Gable roof elements with heart-shaped cutouts were staged for installation.
There was scaffolding on top of the house and a ladder up inside for crew members to work on the top. The open windows on the back are where guests will be able to purchase goods. The mounting elements on the right are for a TV screen that shows menu items and information about the gingerbread house.
The bakery team was having a meeting in the Garden View Lounge before beginning to install shingles on the houses. Bakery Cast Members wear green aprons.
We spotted an icing mixture that is used as glue for the shingles and other elements.
Soon, the bakery team got to work.
Bins of pre-made gingerbread shingles and siding were unveiled. Guests will be able to purchase shingles to eat, as well.
We saw the first siding placed on the side of the house.
Below is what the Grand Floridian gingerbread house looked like last year. It’s always a Victorian-style house but decorations sometimes change year-to-year.
