The announcement was shared first at D23 Brazil, and later on social media. The franchise was originally created by Blue Sky Studios, which was acquired by Disney through its merger with 20th Century Fox. Disney later shuttered the animation studio.

In the announcement, it was also revealed that original cast members Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary, and Simon Pegg will be returning.

The film will release in theaters, though no release date has been set. The previous five “Ice Age” movies have grossed $3.2 billion worldwide; the most recent film, 2016’s “Ice Age: Collision Course,” grossed $408.5 million globally.

This will mark the first film in the franchise since Blue Sky Studios was dissolved.
