Disney Expands Accessibility Through An Assortment of Inclusive Merchandise

We’ve seen an exciting and uplifting trend in Disney merchandise this year — and we’re loving it.

2020 has been an interesting year, to put it mildly, but one positive it has brought is an increase in the amount of accessible merchandise released by Disney. Now, those with disabilities and sensory issues can find products made especially to help them experience Disney.

Kidscreen recently took a look at some of the motivations behind the boom in adaptive products at Disney. In recent months, we’ve seen the release of several merchandise items specifically geared towards adaptability and accessibility.

Wheelchair Accessories

Not only do proceeds from the Wishes Come True Blue collection go to charity, but the collection also includes Disney’s first-ever pair of adjustable ears. These can be worn for those with special needs or medical devices that would impede a specific headband.

You also might remember the VERY cool wheelchair-accessible Halloween costumes that were released a few months ago. These costumes present the option for wheelchair users to transform their chairs into Cinderella Castle or the Incredimobile.

According to Disney’s Senior Vice President of Product Creation for Disney Consumer Products, Games, Publishing, Jenifer DeSofi, “The wheelchair covers allowed us an opportunity to create something that brings fans deeper into the story. A child who loves Cinderella can now also have the experience of riding in her magic carriage to fully transform into the character.”

Disney has expanded to include a line of sensory-friendly apparel too, with flat seams, no tags, wider necklines, and reversible styles to help kiddos with sensory troubles. And MORE shirts featuring Disney characters are coming in December!

On the expansion of accessible product offerings, DeSofi says, “We want to be at the forefront of creating diverse and inclusive products. [Doing so] expands our reach, relevance, and impact with communities and fans around the world.”

We’re totally loving the addition of more accessible merchandise to the Disney product line and you can bet we’ll be keeping an eye out for more. Stay tuned to DFB to catch all of the latest!
