NEWS: Florida Tourism Is Improving…Slowly

The third quarter of 2020, July to September, may have seen the reopening of Walt Disney World’s theme parks after a multi-month closure due to the global health crisis, but tourism is still only returning to Florida slowly.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that Visit Florida, the Sunshine State’s official tourism marketing corporation, recorded a 32% drop in visitors for Q3 from 2019 to 2020.

According to the release, there were an estimated 22.112 million travelers from July 1st to September 30th. In 2019, Florida had 32.412 million visitors.

Though the 32% drop may seem dramatic, it’s a marked improvement from the second quarter’s numbers. From 2019 to 2020, there was a 60.5% drop in tourism experienced from April through June.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis officially reopened the state in September, allowing for bars, restaurants, and even theme parks to operate at full capacity. Walt Disney World, however, has not reopened to 100%, even though they HAVE increased capacity at the parks.
