We’ve been following the saga that is Gertie the Dinosaur’s tail for the last few weeks. Now, it seems Disney has completely removed her tail.

On February 14, our reporters noticed a deep horizontal crack running along Gertie the Dinosaur’s tail. The spot is normally hidden by landscaping, but with the removal of vegetation due to Florida’s recent freezing temperatures, the structure is now fully visible to guests.

On February 14, our reporters noticed a deep horizontal crack running along Gertie the Dinosaur’s tail. The spot is normally hidden by landscaping, but with the removal of vegetation due to Florida’s recent freezing temperatures, the structure is now fully visible to guests.

By February 16, the crack had been patched and painted over. This fix was insufficient, as the crack reopened by February 27.

Now, Disney has completely removed Gertie’s tail, which appears to be an external structure only, as Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction remains open and operating normally. Hopefully, Disney has removed the tail to figure out a permanent fix.

Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction has stood in Echo Lake since the park originally opened as Disney-MGM Studios in 1989. The iconic green brontosaurus is based on the character of Gertie the Dinosaur, who first appeared in cartoons in 1914.
