In a post on Instagram, Wonder Man star Yahya Abdul-Mateen spoke about the show’s sudden cancellation and reflected on his time with the project.

Abdul-Mateen II Statement

Not long after the news broke yesterday of Wonder Man‘s cancellation, the show’s star Abdul-Mateen II posted on Instagram, commenting on how glad he was to be part of the show. The caption read:

Word just dropped that Wonder Man won’t be coming back for Season 2. (And if you don’t knowww, now ya knoww! 😬) That’s life, right? Everything will shake out. I wanted to say thank you to everybody who WATCHED the show, ENJOYED the show, and SHARED that they enjoyed the show in some way or other. The show worked. And that’s my favorite thing about it. I could see it on the faces of the Youtube Reactors (because I watched along with y’all this time. Shoutout to y’all) and I can see in the messages I get saying how the show reminded some of you not to give up, and I feel it in the genuine love shared when I bump into some of you all during the day. So, thinking of you all today. I’m glad we got to be a part of something cool. Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS. 🫡✌🏾

Abdul-Mateen II was nominated for the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy for his role in Wonder Man, and the awards presentation is on September 14, 2026.

Wonder Man Cancellation

Wonder Man, which was already announced to have a season 2 earlier this year, was canceled by Disney+. This cancellation came despite the show’s high critical and audience reception, with a 91% Tomatometer score and an 87% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.

That was even higher than Loki, which received two seasons and had both an 87% Tomatometer and Popcornmeter score on the site. Daredevil, which had three seasons, did slightly better than both with a 92% Tomatometer and a 90% Popcornmeter.

Wonder Man

Wonder Man starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams and Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Trevor Slattery from Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Both characters are aspiring actors hoping to land roles in the remake of superhero film Wonder Man — Simon just happens to have real superpowers.

It was created by Destin Daniel Cretton (director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Andrew Guest (consulting producer of Hawkeye). Cretton, James Ponsoldt, Tiffany Johnson, and Stella Meghie directed.

Wonder Man was introduced to Marvel Comics in 1964 via The Avengers #9, created by legends Stan Lee, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby.

Wonder Man was the second show to fall under Marvel’s “Spotlight” banner, the first being Echo. “Spotlight” projects are Marvel shows written to be more accessible and less dependent on extensive MCU backstory, while remaining canonical.
