The American Adventure’s patriotic solar-powered trash cans have returned after mysteriously disappearing just days after their debut in early July.
The American Adventure Trash Cans
The updated trash cans have now been installed throughout the pavilion, replacing the older, generic brown trash cans previously found in the area. The returning design appears unchanged from the version first spotted outside The American Adventure on July 5.
The patriotic cans initially had only a brief stay at The American Adventure. We spotted two near the pavilion’s central fountain on July 5, but they had disappeared by July 8. Disney did not announce a reason for their removal.
As of August 1, however, the cans have reappeared and completely replaced all older brown trash cans throughout the pavilion.
The new cans have a bright white front framed by black trim, navy blue side panels, and a rounded gray top containing the solar equipment. A patriotic shield is centered on the front, featuring red and white vertical stripes beneath a blue field with three white stars.
Gold trim surrounds the emblem, while “76” at the top references 1776 and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The black waste openings are labeled with gold icons and white “TRASH” or “RECYCLE” lettering. White foot pedals at the bottom allow guests to open the receptacles without touching the doors, a process which has proven difficult for at least some Walt Disney World guests.
Both standalone trash cans and paired trash-and-recycling units are now positioned around the pavilion. Their customized red, white, blue, and gold color scheme better complements The American Adventure than the nondescript brown cans they replaced.
The new cans use solar energy to power compactors inside the units, allowing them to hold more waste before they must be emptied. Disney has gradually introduced similar solar-powered trash cans throughout EPCOT and other areas of Walt Disney World, though most use designs tailored to their respective locations.
Still, the American Adventure’s cans remain one of the boldest designs we’ve seen yet among the new solar-powered trash cans.
