Disney is working to make it easier to load guests in wheelchairs and ECVs onto attractions without the need to transfer.

Loading Wheelchairs & ECVs Without Transferring

“Rider Inclusive Transport Aide” was published on September 17, 2026 but was filed on March 11, 2025. The abstract reads:

A ride vehicle may include a platform configured to receive an object. In one example, the platform is configured to move in response to a tilting motion of the ride vehicle to transport the object on the moveable platform in a flat orientation with respect to a water or ground surface. In another example, the platform forms a load surface configured to receive an object, wherein the platform is configured to move in response to a movement of the vehicle to maintain the platform in a flat orientation with respect to a water or ground surface.

Essentially, the patent describes an accessibility system built into a ride vehicle—particularly a boat—that can carry a wheelchair, scooter, stroller, etc. onto the vehicle without requiring the person to leave their device.

The loading platform itself moves as the ride vehicle tilts back and forth, while keeping the wheelchair or other object relatively level. This keeps the device from tilting or shifting.

This could not only improve the comfort of guests using accessibility devices but potentially shorten wait times because rides would not necessarily have to stop for as long to allow guests with these devices to load.

Currently, several Disney Parks rides require guests to transfer from an ECV or wheelchair into the ride vehicle, or even from an ECV to a wheelchair and then to a ride vehicle. Some rides do accommodate wheelchair and ECV users, usually with a specially-designed vehicle.

For example, “it’s a small world” at Walt Disney World has a wheelchair-accessible boat, but guests in ECVs or scooters must transfer to a wheelchair. Read more about accessibility at Walt Disney World.

Though Disney has been granted this patent, it could be years before we see it implemented at a Disney Park.
