Bakari, a silverback gorilla new to Animal Kingdom, has received his routine wellness checkup at the vet hospital at Conservation Station.

In the clip shared by @animalsatdisney on Instagram, followers at home and even guests at the park got to witness Bakari’s checkup.

The gorilla was unconscious and placed on a table and hooked up to medical wires. Veterinarians were hard at work, checking out the gorilla’s teeth, performing a CT scan to take a look at his organs, and taking X-rays of his skull.

Meet Bakari

Bakari is a new gorilla appearing on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. He’s a 21-year-old male who arrived at Animal Kingdom from the Saint Louis Zoo in late June. While Bakari acclimated to his new home, it resulted in temporary closures of the gorilla viewing area.

Bakari’s arrival marked an important milestone. For nearly three decades, the family group was led by Gino, the silverback, who helped shape generations of gorillas at Animal Kingdom. Bakari represents the next generation and the beginning of an exciting new era for the troop.

“Bringing Bakari here is bittersweet because it means we’ve said goodbye to Gino, who was our silverback for almost 30 years since the park’s opening,” said Rachel, animal care manager with Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment. “But it’s also incredibly exciting. Bakari is the future of this family troop, and we’re looking forward to watching him grow into that role and hopefully help welcome new generations of gorillas for years to come.”
