Despite centering on one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most prominent artificial beings, VisionQuest reportedly leveraged pure-human talent for its production.
No Generative AI Used for VisionQuest
VisionQuest creator and showrunner Terry Matalas confirmed in an interview with ScreenRant that generative AI was not used during production.
When asked about any potential involvement in the project, Matalas was quick to lay concerns to rest, saying there was “not at all” a need for AI assistance:
“No, not at all. There hasn’t really been a need. All the designs nod to how our current form of AI processes things… That felt like a fun way for us to comment on it.”
Production designer Will Hughes-Jones and his team reportedly recreated common generative AI mistakes through traditional production methods. Vision’s internal “Mindscape” includes intentionally illogical details such as stair railings that lead nowhere, chairs built into walls, and misshapen furniture – all telltale signs of early generative AI imagery.
The setting for the series is populated by human representations of artificial intelligence programs from throughout the MCU, allowing the production team to comment on the technology’s shortcomings without using generative AI itself.
Marvel Studios previously faced criticism for using generative AI to create the opening title sequence for its 2023 Disney+ series Secret Invasion.
VisionQuest continues the story of White Vision following the events of WandaVision. Although White Vision regained the original Vision’s memories during the series finale, he does not have an emotional connection to them. The new series follows him as he attempts to understand his identity, history, and humanity.
Paul Bettany reprises his role as Vision, while James Spader returns as Ultron. Disney first released the first full preview of the series in August, along with displaying White Vision’s suit at D23. VisionQuest will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on October 14, 2026; watch the official VisionQuest trailer here.
