While many Star Wars heroes and villains have historically enjoyed a jump in storytelling from the big screen to the printed word, Din Djarin and Grogu’s latest adventure may not get the same treatment as their predecessors.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Novelization – Cancelled?
The planned deluxe junior novelization of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu has reportedly been canceled. A publishing catalog entry shared on the Star Wars Books subreddit shows the book’s status as outright “CANCELLED.”
The book was originally scheduled for release on November 17, 2026, before being postponed into 2027. Its publication date changed more than once, with listings showing dates including September 7, 2027, and February 23, 2027.
A more overtly concerning sign is the fact that the title’s dedicated Penguin Random House webpage has since become unavailable, further indicating that the release has been abandoned. However, audiobook listings remain accessible through Amazon and Audible as of publication. The hardcover’s Amazon listing is unavailable for purchase and reportedly displays a placeholder release date of January 2, 2079.
Neither Disney, Lucasfilm, nor Random House has formally announced the book’s cancellation.
Before its apparent removal, the Penguin Random House listing described the book as a 144-page retelling of The Mandalorian and Grogu intended for readers ages 6–9. The $12.99 hardcover was set to include 16 pages of full-color images and a poster.
No individual author was ever announced for the novelization. Listings instead credited Random House as its writer and illustrator.
A Historic Gap in Star Wars Releases
If the apparent cancellation stands, The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the first theatrically released Star Wars film without an official prose adaptation. Every previous movie in the franchise—including the nine Skywalker Saga installments, Rogue One, Solo, and the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars—received both adult and junior novelizations, making this an unprecedented break from a publishing tradition dating back to the original Star Wars novelization in 1976.
Alan Dean Foster adapted George Lucas’ screenplay while the original film was still being produced, though Lucas is credited as the author of the official release. The novel was famously released in advance of the movie following production delays that pushed the film’s release into 1977. Consequently, Star Wars as a franchise has a print history even longer than the core film series itself.
The Mandalorian and Grogu was released theatrically on May 22, 2026. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film continued the story of Din Djarin and Grogu from the Disney+ series and followed the pair as they undertook a dangerous mission for the New Republic. The film is now available on Disney+ and home media.
