The enormous construction zone for Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land now stretches from the former Rivers of America far into the backstage areas of Magic Kingdom.
Aerial photographer bioreconstruct shared new photos offering an overview of the projects and several nearby infrastructure developments.
Piston Peak and Villains Land Construction
The widest aerial view shows nearly all of Magic Kingdom, with the combined Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land construction zone dominating the right side of the park.
The photo also identifies three developments outside the park: (1) a fireworks launch location aligned with Cinderella Castle, (2) a new office building under construction near Adventureland, and (3) the new routing of Floridian Way.
The former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island have been almost entirely replaced by graded land, excavated pits, construction materials, and temporary roadways. Piston Peak occupies the area directly behind Liberty Square and Frontierland, while the future Villains Land site extends farther into the former backstage area.
A tower crane was recently installed near the center of the Piston Peak site. Crews continue to excavate and prepare foundations around it, particularly near The Haunted Mansion and the former Liberty Square Riverboat landing.
Large quantities of pipes, concrete components, and other materials are staged throughout the site. A new waterway is expected to separate portions of Piston Peak from Liberty Square and Frontierland, preserving a waterfront element despite the removal of the Rivers of America.
Near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, crews continue working alongside the attraction’s new visual barrier. Excavated areas, utility materials, and temporary roads now surround much of the railroad’s outer perimeter.
Piston Peak National Park will include two attractions: Cars Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along. The land is inspired by the American West and real national parks, incorporating forests, waterways, geysers, and mountainous scenery into the Cars universe.
Possible Expansion Pad and Tree Staging
At the upper edge of the construction zone is a large staging area that bioreconstruct suggested could eventually serve as an expansion pad. Disney has not confirmed the long-term purpose of this space.
Several mature trees are being stored in this area. These trees were transplanted from the former Rivers of America landscape and may eventually be replanted throughout Piston Peak National Park.
Another view provides a closer look at the tree staging area beside the show buildings for The Haunted Mansion and “it’s a small world.” The cast member bus stop used to access the Utilidor is also visible nearby.
Former Steamboat Dock at Villains Land Site
One aerial photo highlights development near the former point where the Rivers of America connected to Magic Kingdom’s service canal. An arrow identifies what remains of an old backstage dock. Magic Kingdom originally operated two steamboats, allowing one vessel to be stored at the dock during days when lower attendance did not require both boats to be in service.
The surrounding landscape has now been cleared and incorporated into the larger development area for Villains Land. Earthmoving and utility work remain the primary activity here, with much of the future land still in the site-preparation stage.
New Backstage Office Building
Elsewhere backstage, steel framing continues to rise for a new office building behind Adventureland. The multi-story structure is beside the service canal used by the Electrical Water Pageant barges.
Most of the building’s structural frame is now standing, including a central concrete core. Additional steel is being installed along the canal-facing side while construction equipment and materials surround the building.
Floridian Way Changes
The aerial overview also shows the newly configured section of Floridian Way beyond Magic Kingdom. The roadway project is separate from the park expansion but is changing vehicle access around the resort’s northern end.
The former intersection of Floridian Way and Seven Seas Drive closed permanently earlier this summer, with traffic redirected through the developing road network.
Disney has not yet announced opening dates for either Piston Peak National Park or Villains Land.
Piston Peak National Park
The Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island closed permanently last summer to be demolished and transformed into both Piston Peak National Park, as part of Frontierland, and Villains Land.
Villains Land
Villains Land is the next, highly anticipated, and much-rumored Magic Kingdom expansion that Disney announced for a new area of land beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Disney has said the area will center on its classic animated villains and will include two major attractions, dining locations, and new park shops.
The sizable park expansions coming to Magic Kingdom are purported to be the “largest ever” based on various comments since the expansions were first teased in 2022 and 2023.
