Every once in a while, the DFB team gets into a HOT debate. Most of the time, it’s about which Disney World ride is best, which park snack reigns supreme, or whether a turkey leg is an abomination or not.

Recently, a brand-new restaurant opened at Universal Orlando CityWalk, and we were lucky enough to get invited to preview the spot before Fat One’s Hot Dogs officially welcomed diners. That meant that we had to decide who exactly was going to go to the media event, and it caused quite the tiff with multiple coworkers fighting over who would receive the honor.

Fat One’s Hot Dogs and Italian Ice is officially open at CityWalk in Universal Orlando, and we got invited to check it out before its opening date. This led to a hot debate among the DFB team about who, exactly, was going to get to attend the event — and by hot debate, I mean that I was trying my hardest to make sure that person was ME. Unfortunately, I am also an editor here at DFB, and on the date of the event, I was scheduled to edit and run the site.

It was close, though, as we only had one other person available since it was a little last-minute, and since that person happened to be one of our reporters, well, it obviously made sense for them to attend the event instead of me (especially because I live about 90 minutes from Orlando). But, you see, I love hot dogs, corn dogs, you name it — it’s kind of part of my identity at this point. Everyone knows I got that dog in me. I even have a wiener dog (his name is Tyrion, and he is perfect). So, hot dogs are kind of my thing, so I was sad that it would not work out.

What’s even funnier is that I was actually at the opening of the Fat One’s location at the Florida Mall in Orlando back in 2016, because I knew that Joey Fatone would be there, just like he was at this media event. So, I guess it’s only fair that I passed that torch onto one of our reporters so that they could enjoy the experience as well.

As I was writing this article, I was curious about how many of our team members actually like hot dogs, since I know they can be rather divisive themselves. Most of our team here at DFB are staunchly pro-hot dog, with only a handful of folks standing against the iconic snack. A few were fans of hot dogs, but said that it entirely depended on how they were cooked and which toppings were on it, which, I suppose, is understandable.

Luckily, our reporter had a great time at the Fat One’s event, and raved about the hot dogs themselves — so I can’t wait to visit and give them a try! Our reporter got to try Joey’s favorite (which is also now our fave), The Angelo ($10.49), a hot dog with tzatziki, tomatoes, red onion, olive tapenade, feta, and fresh dill on a brioche bun. Joey described it as a Mediterranean take on a hot dog, and he’s SO right. It’s fresh and light, but still loaded with flavor. The tzatziki adds a tanginess, while the veggies add a nice crunch. The dill brings in some brightness, while the feta and olive tapenade are more subtle and blend in with the other flavors. This is a hot dog that could pretty much please anyone.

We also had a chance to try The Fat One ($15.99), which is a footlong hot dog piled with roasted pork, pepperoni, chili beans, cheddar cheese sauce, red onion sauce, and fries on a soft bun. It’s a lot, and it’s messy, and we really hope you’re hungry if you order this. The meat flavors are most of what you get in each bite, along with a hint of flavor from the beans and the mild, creamy cheese sauce. The fries add a crispy potato flavor to each bite. This is for those of you who love loaded hot dogs.
