Meta’s new VR glasses will provide 3D and enhanced versions of Avengers and Star Wars movies for fans to enjoy at home.

The $1,299 VR glasses will usher in “a new era for virtual reality” by providing users with “a cinema, courtside seat, workspace, and console” in their living rooms, Meta announced during Meta Connect on Wednesday. (via Variety)
The 5K Infinity Display using micro-OLED panels makes the glasses the first IMAX-certified VR device, Meta states. They support Dolby Vision and spatial audio experiences with Dolby Atmos.
They will be able to stream 3D versions of Disney films, including The Avengers and Black Panther, and VR-enhanced versions of Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: A New Hope.
The glasses will also support 3D movies from the libraries of Peacock, HBO Max, Paramount+, and Lionsgate. And James Cameron’s Lightstorm Vision is developing “first time in 3D” films for next year.
Meta also struck deals with the NBA, MLB, and ESPN to bring immersive sporting experiences to the glasses. They will support more than 75 games at launch that can be played with hand gestures. The glasses will also be compatible with Xbox Cloud Gaming via a handheld pack.
The glasses are five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3 headset, the company’s last VR product released in 2024. They’re powered by a Qualcomm chip and the battery can provide up to three hours of continuous media playback. An AI agent can also help users complete tasks and access content.
Mark Zuckerberg said at Meta Connect, “We have built a new kind of VR device that delivers the same magical feeling of presence and immersion, high-resolution displays and views of the world around you in a form factor that is a pair of glasses for the first time.”
He added, “There’s really nothing else like this. It is a glimpse of the future.”
