Jeff Vahle, former president of Walt Disney World and an Auburn University alumnus, returned to his alma mater to speak with engineering students about his career and experiences at The Walt Disney Company.
Auburn’s Theme Park Engineering and Design organization hosted the September 23 event at the Brown-Kopel Engineering Student Achievement Center.
Jeff Vahle Reflects on Disney Career at Auburn University
Jeff Vahle was the former president of Walt Disney World and retired July 2026 from the Walt Disney Company after 36 years of service. He first announced his upcoming retirement in May 2026.
Vahle earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Auburn University in 1985, but he did not join Disney immediately after graduating.
Through a scholarship program, Vahle began his career with Eastman Kodak, then one of the world’s most prominent brands. He spent five years working for the company as a mechanical engineer supporting maintenance and utilities.
“It was a great, great company that hired some of the best people, but they just couldn’t figure out where they were going,” Vahle said.
Vahle eventually decided to leave Columbia, South Carolina, and return to Central Florida, where he had grown up. There, he found himself at a crossroads with three job offers on the table:
“Two of them were in the citrus industry, where one was for making juice and one was designing machinery for juice processing. The third job was in maintenance at Magic Kingdom… I went to Disney.”
Vahle joined The Walt Disney Company in 1990 as a maintenance manager at Magic Kingdom. During the following three decades, he held leadership roles supporting the development and operation of Disney destinations in the United States and abroad. He became president of Walt Disney World in July 2020.
Vahle told students he is often asked, “How do I get to do what you do?” His go-to response emphasizes that careers rarely follow a predictable route:
“You never know where you are going to end up. I never thought I was going to be doing the things I’m doing today […] There’s a lot of people who want to have their path be ‘how do I get from A, B, to C, D’ and the answer is that everyone’s going to have a different path. There’s a different way for you to get to the place you want to go, so focus on the job that you’re in, do it right, and big things will happen for you.”
Vahle led Walt Disney World through its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and oversaw several major attraction and resort openings. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, TRON Lightcycle / Run, and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure were among the attractions that debuted during his tenure.
Vahle said he particularly enjoys attractions in which “the details suspend you from where you are and make you feel like you’re someplace different.”
He also encouraged students interested in working for Disney to pursue firsthand experience through opportunities such as the Disney College Program, internships, or cooperative education programs.
When asked what made him most proud during his 36 years at Disney, Vahle pointed not to an attraction or project, but to the people with whom he worked.
“The work is fun and great, but how do you impact people personally and help them through things that are most important to them? How do you help them, and all of us, to be better as people? To know you made a difference in a way that’s going to last far longer than our jobs.”
