The new Star Wars trilogy being penned by Simon Kinberg now has Jon Watts attached as director of the first installment.

Jon Watts to Direct Next ‘Star Wars’ Movie

The next trilogy of the Star Wars franchise is being referred to as the Skywalker Saga, and has been worked on by Kinberg since late 2024. The new trilogy is intended to be the next chapter featuring multiple generations of Skywalkers. Rey Skywalker, played by Daisy Ridley in the last trilogy, would appear in some capacity in the new trilogy.

Watts, who is also the director behind three Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, is attached as the director of the first installment of Kinberg’s new trilogy. He is no stranger to the Star Wars franchise, as he is the co-creator and co-writer of the Star Wars series Skeleton Crew.

Currently, Lucasfilm has its focus on the post-production of its next Star Wars film, Star Wars: Starfighter, the next phase of a potential new Skywalker Saga.

Star Wars: Starfighter is being directed by Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Gosling, and is expected to make its theatrical debut on May 27, 2027, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Star Wars.

Disney has yet to greenlight the new Kinberg trilogy, and sources say it is still in development, but it seems to be the project next in line after the release of Star Wars: Starfighter.
