Push-pull testing has begun on Shanghai Disneyland’s new Spider-Man roller coaster and Walt Disney Imagineering shared a behind-the-scenes look at the process.

Spider-Man Coaster Testing

The video features Colin, Senior Ride Development Engineer, and Grace, Ride Project Coordinator. As Colin explains, push-pull testing involves slowly pulling a ride vehicle along the completed track at a rate of about one centimeter per second.

Along the way, Imagineers and crew members perform a variety of measurements to ensure there is enough space between the car and other elements. Three large clearance envelopes attached to the vehicle represent guests. There are three because the vehicle doesn’t stay perfectly upright throughout the ride — it rolls and leans — so multiple envelopes help them check multiple angles.

The coaster track was completed this summer and testing began last week. Disney shared the first look at ride vehicles and concept art for a giant Spider-Bot during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

The coaster is part of a brand-new Spider-Man land. Though focused on the web-slinger, other Marvel characters will appear.
