Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed its title as the highest-grossing film in box office history following its “Encore” theatrical re-release.
‘Avengers: Endgame’ Reclaims Box Office Record
According to Variety, the 2019 Marvel Studios film has now grossed a historic $2.925 billion worldwide. That puts it just above James Cameron’s Avatar, which has earned $2.923 billion globally after five theatrical re-releases.
Avatar held the worldwide box office record for approximately a decade before Avengers: Endgame surpassed it during its original 2019 theatrical run. Avatar returned to the top of the all-time chart following another theatrical release in 2021, but Endgame has now overtaken it again following its own extended re-release as Avengers Endgame: Encore.
Both films are owned by Disney. Avatar was originally released by 20th Century Fox, which Disney acquired in 2019. Disney is responsible for seven of the 10 highest-grossing films of all time, including Avatar: The Way of Water at $2.33 billion, Titanic at $2.26 billion, and Avengers: Infinity War at $2.05 billion.
Disney and Marvel Studios returned Avengers: Endgame to theaters to build anticipation for Avengers: Doomsday, which will be released in December. The “Encore” re-release on its own has generated more than $126 million worldwide.
Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed Avengers: Endgame, are returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday. The upcoming film is the 39th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will reunite many of the franchise’s superheroes for the first time since Endgame.
Of course, the MCU remains the most commercially successful film franchise in history. Following Spider-Man: Brand New Day reaching $2.5 billion worldwide, Marvel films have collectively generated $35.07 billion at the box office.
The milestone comes ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, which recently became the earliest film to reach $50 million in domestic advance ticket sales. Director Kevin Feige recently confirmed that one character will anchor the story of Doomsday.
