Disney Adults, I’m going to hold your hand when I say this… You may be trying WAY too hard on your Disney World vacation.
I know. You’ve got the spreadsheet, the color-coded itinerary, and a very specific understanding of how long it takes to get from Space Mountain to Pirates of the Caribbean. You’ve probably even wondered whether that 11:20 AM lunch reservation is going to make your 12:05 PM Lightning Lane more stressful than it needs to be. We get it because we are those people, too. But after enough Disney World trips, we’ve learned something we really wish someone had told us earlier…
We REALLY wish someone had told us that being good at Disney World isn’t about squeezing in the most rides, meals, and character stops possible. It’s about doing enough homework before you arrive that you can actually relax once you’re there. That took us a while to learn, and there are a few other things we wish someone had explained before our first few trips.
You Need a Plan. You Do NOT Need a Military Operation.
We are enormous fans of planning around here. Obviously, we’ve built an entire business around Disney vacation planning! Some things are worth planning ahead for — the hard-to-get dining reservations, the snacks you don’t want to miss, and the rides your family will never let you forget if you somehow skip them. The trouble starts when being prepared turns into trying to account for every single minute of the day, right down to when everyone is allowed to take a bathroom break. Please DON’T do this.
Pick the things you absolutely cannot leave Disney World without doing. Maybe that’s riding Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. Maybe it’s dinner at ‘Ohana. Maybe your entire vacation has been constructed around hugging Winnie the Pooh. Great, protect those things. Everything else gets some wiggle room.
Because one of the weird little secrets of Disney World is that some of your favorite memories probably won’t be the things you spent six months scheduling. They’ll be sitting on a bench with a snack while a parade passes. Wandering through your resort after dark. Catching a character interaction you weren’t expecting. Spending an extra 20 minutes in World Showcase because somebody found a margarita and nobody is particularly concerned about the next ride anymore. A vacation itinerary should give your trip some bones. It should not put the whole thing in a corset.
Make the Important Dining Reservations Early
Now, this does NOT mean we are throwing your planning binder into Seven Seas Lagoon. Some things genuinely do require forethought, and Disney dining is one of them. Popular reservations can disappear quickly. There is a specific kind of sadness in standing outside the restaurant you REALLY wanted to try, refreshing the My Disney Experience app, and discovering your options are… completely not available for the next six months and the walk-up waitlist is full.
Do your restaurant research before the trip. Figure out which reservations are priorities. Know which meals deserve one of those precious vacation evenings and which places you’re perfectly happy skipping. THIS is exactly where our DFB Everything Bundle earns its keep. It includes our restaurant guides for Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, the Disney World hotels, and more, along with our Disney Dining Plan guide, snack guides, and seasonal festival guides.
The whole point is to answer those “Is this place actually worth my money?” questions BEFORE you’re hungry, tired, standing in EPCOT, and negotiating dinner with six people who all have six completely incompatible opinions. Do your research at home and make the important reservations in advance, so when you’re in the parks you can put your phone down.
Please Budget for Snacks
You are going to buy snacks. That’s non-negotiable. Is it even a Disney vacation if you aren’t noshing on something Mickey-shaped at some point? You can try to announce that everybody will eat one proper breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and there will be NO frivolous spending in between. Then you’ll smell popcorn on Main Street, someone will spot a Mickey pretzel, EPCOT will release 14 festival foods you didn’t know existed yesterday, and your carefully constructed food budget will have sprung several tiny, delicious leaks.
We like budgeting snacks separately because it gives you permission to enjoy them without feeling like every Mickey bar is a small act of financial sabotage. And PLEASE research snacks before your trip. Disney World has a lot of them, and some deserve your stomach space more than others. That’s why the Everything Bundle includes dedicated snack guides for all four theme parks, plus guides to EPCOT’s major festivals, Halloween, and the holidays.
There is only so much room in your stomach; take that real estate seriously. Unless you just choose to only snack on the queen of all Disney snacks, the Key Lime Pie Pop (like me). If that’s your choice, you’ll get no shade from me.
Some of Disney World’s Best Food Isn’t in a Theme Park
Here is another rookie mistake we understand completely. You spend thousands of dollars going to Disney World, so naturally you assume you should spend every waking moment inside a Disney World theme park. Except some of our favorite meals aren’t there (Jiko, I’m looking at you).
Disney’s resort hotels have fantastic restaurants. Disney Springs could consume several meals of your vacation without breaking a sweat. You could build an entire evening around hopping between resort lounges and never scan a park ticket once. And every once in a while, leaving the parks for dinner is exactly what everybody needs.
There is a different rhythm outside the gates. You’re not inhaling your entrée because your next Lightning Lane window starts in 23 minutes. Nobody is staring over your shoulder wondering how long the standby wait has gotten. You’re just having dinner. Wild concept, we know.
Our Everything Bundle includes an entire hotel restaurant guide specifically because ignoring Disney World resort dining means ignoring a huge chunk of Disney World’s food scene. Do yourself a favor and look beyond the four parks when you’re planning your meals. You might discover the restaurant you spend the rest of the year talking about.
Your Resort Day Is Not a Day You “Lost”
This one can be PAINFUL for Disney Adults. You paid for Disney World. You traveled to Disney World. Maybe you can even physically see Cinderella Castle from your hotel room. And we are suggesting you spend an afternoon…at the pool? Yes, yes, we are.
Your feet are going to cover an absurd amount of ground during a Disney vacation. You’re waking up early and staying out late. You’re navigating heat, crowds, transportation, rides, restaurants, and trying to emotionally regulate your entire group’s expectations in a hyper-stimulating environment. So, we are giving you permission to give yourself some breathing room.
Sleep in a little. Grab breakfast without checking the wait times between bites. Spend a few hours at the pool, wander around your resort, or finally try that restaurant you usually rush past on the way somewhere else. Maybe you even sit in a lounge for an hour with absolutely nowhere you need to be next. That’s not wasting a Disney day. That’s actually being on vacation. An afternoon by the pool is exactly what everyone needs to reset before you tackle Magic Kingdom again tomorrow.
Check the Calendar Before You Book
Not all Disney World weeks are created equal. Weather, holidays, festivals, special events, school breaks, and park hours can all shape your trip in ways that aren’t obvious when you first pick your dates. Unfortunately, there is no secret week when the parks are empty, the weather is perfect, and hotel rooms are mysteriously half price. If that week ever appears, we’ll see you there.
The goal is just to know what you’re walking into. If your trip overlaps with an EPCOT festival, you may want to set aside extra money for food booths. If a holiday party is happening during your stay, that could change your evening plans. And if you’re visiting during one of those stretches when Florida feels like it has been placed directly under a heat lamp, you may want to build more breaks into the afternoon. A little extra research before you book can save you from having to constantly rearrange your plans once you’re already there.
Our DFB Everything Bundle includes guides to the EPCOT Food & Wine Festival, Flower & Garden Festival, Festival of the Arts, Halloween, and the holidays, along with the core restaurant and snack guides. Instead of discovering halfway through your vacation that something enormous is happening three monorail stops away, you can know what’s coming before you arrive. We prefer our Disney surprises to involve characters and snacks, not logistics.
Stop Looking at Your Phone for Five Minutes
Here’s the part where I squeeze your hand a little tighter: at some point, you have to stop optimizing the trip. Disney World planning asks you to be on your phone a lot. You’re checking reservations, wait times, mobile orders, Lightning Lanes, maps, photos, and messages, and before long you realize you’ve spent a huge chunk of the day staring at a tiny digital version of the place you’re already standing in.
So look up once in a while. Notice the details on Main Street, U.S.A. Listen to the background music in EPCOT. Watch your kid see the castle for the first time, or your spouse light up when their favorite character walks by. Enjoy the snack without immediately wondering whether you can squeeze in one more ride afterward. Sit down. Stay a little longer than you planned.
Put down your emotional support mobile device and commit to just being present in the moment. At least for a little while. You’ve spent all of this money to be in the “Most Magical Place on Earth”; it’d be a shame if you missed it all because you were on your phone.
Plan Enough That You Can Actually Go on Vacation
This may be the biggest lesson we wish somebody had told us years ago. The goal of Disney planning isn’t to create the perfect schedule. It’s to remove enough uncertainty that you have room to enjoy yourself. Figure out which restaurants are the biggest priority, which snacks are actually worth the splurge, and what festivals or special events will be happening while you’re there. Lock in the tough reservations, choose your true must-dos, and then resist the urge to fill every remaining hour. That’s one of the reasons we created the DFB Everything Bundle in the first place.
It combines our guides covering Disney World restaurants, hotel dining, snacks, the Disney Dining Plan, EPCOT festivals, Halloween, the holidays, and more into one giant planning resource. You can research everything before your vacation while you’re sitting comfortably on your couch instead of panic-Googling “BEST EPCOT RESTAURANT HELP” with 11% battery remaining.
That preparation gives you something incredibly valuable once you arrive: permission to stop planning. Because you will never do everything at Disney World, you’re not supposed to. Pick the good stuff. Eat something ridiculous. Sit down occasionally. Change the plan when something better comes along. And every once in a while, put your phone in your pocket and remember where you are. Stay tuned to DFB for more.
