Nicolas Cage hasn’t signed on for National Treasure 3, although director Jon Turteltaub has said the film is “happening.”
Is Nicolas Cage Returning for National Treasure 3?
At New York Comic Con, The Hollywood Reporter asked Cage about the third film. He responded, “I didn’t sign up for that. You got to get these microphones out of these directors’ hands. We’ll see if I want to get together with it.” (via Comicbook.com)
In August, Turteltaub told the National Treasure Hunt podcast that National Treasure 3 was “finally real.” He joked, “Now, it’s ‘Hollywood real,’ meaning things can happen. Nic gets hit by a bus; there’s no National Treasure 3.”
That seemed to imply Cage was involved, but the actor apparently hasn’t signed a contract. Still, that doesn’t mean that Cage wouldn’t join the film.
He joked this weekend that Ben Gates would be “going after the Epstein files. That would be relevant. I’ll make that movie.”
What is clear from Turteltaub’s comments is that he wants Cage to return and the film probably wouldn’t happen without the star.
Back in 2024, Cage told Deadline he was “kind of amazed” Disney hadn’t greenlit a threequel.
Right now, Cage is busy, having just announced he would star in season five of True Detective. He recently starred in Amazon’s Spider-Noir, but it was canceled after one season. Cage revealed at NYCC that he might never work with Amazon again after refusing to sign a waiver allowing for use of AI in the series.
The first National Treasure film was released in 2004, followed by a sequel in 2007. Cast and crew have discussed the possibility of a third film since the second was released, but nothing has come to fruition. A spin-off series, National Treasure: Edge of History, premiered in 2022. It was canceled after one season. Cage was not involved with the spin-off.
