It Just Got Safer to Fly on Allegiant and Delta Airlines

Now, this is a GREAT change for two airlines!

When it comes to medical emergencies onboard a flight, flight attendants are there to help, but there isn’t a ton that they are able to do themselves. Planes do come with medical kits, but now two airlines have added something that will make them even more prepared for medical emergencies related to allergies.

It was reported by Allergic Living that two airlines are now adding epinephrine auto-injectors into the emergency medical kits of all their aircraft. Those two airlines are Delta Airlines and Allegiant Air.

The news comes as the food allergy community and experts “express concerns to the Federal Aviation Administration – because the agency is not planning to make epinephrine devices on airplanes mandatory.” The FAA says only that treatment for anaphylaxis in airline emergency kits “could include” epinephrine, in a proposed new rule.

A Delta Airlines spokesperson commented that the auto-injectors are “in line with our continued focus on the health and safety of our people and customers.” The move to having auto-injectors in the emergency medical kits onboard Delta aircraft will continue throughout 2027. So, availability may vary by aircraft for the next year.

As for Allegiant, they say that epinephrine auto-injectors are being added to its emergency medical kits in addition to epinephrine vials. As of right now, there is no rollout schedule that has been provided by the airline. “Our focus is ensuring our aircraft are equipped to respond to medical emergencies effectively,” said their spokesperson.

Allegiant Air

Delta and Allegiant will be joining JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, and American Airlines as other U.S. carriers that stock auto-injectors in their emergency medical kits. Other airlines carry epinephrine vials that have to be drawn up. “The auto-injector safety upgrades from Delta and Allegiant are a welcome turn of events following the FAA’s unveiling of its proposed new rule. It opts for a ‘flexible’ standard of what EMKs contain,” says Allergic Living.

While it’s great that these two airlines have become safer for those with allergies, we do strongly recommend making sure you always have what you need on you when you travel. We totally get that sometimes things happen, like forgetting things at home, you can’t bring your carry-on on the flight, etc. So, this change is a welcome one!
