A refurbishment is underway at the Gibbons exhibit near Kali River Rapids at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The exhibit has had no ape residents for a while now but the refurbishment work may mean they will soon return.

Following the draining of the exhibit’s moat earlier this week, crews have installed scrims around the base of the center structure. A stretch of scrim run from the bottom of the structure across the ground into the empty moat.

Currently, rocks are holding down this scrim.

In two places, scrims cover equipment running across the moat. We can’t tell what exactly is under these scrims but there appear to be wires dangling underneath them.

Another scrim is over some bushes, maybe where another piece of equipment sits.

The blue tube from draining is still visible and a metal tube hanging over the moat has been exposed.

A few years ago, one of the Gibbons reportedly passed away and the other has since lived backstage, leaving the exhibit uninhabited. Gibbons have still been advertised on the Walt Disney World website, however. Disney may be planning to bring Gibbons or another species back to this exhibit.

The Angola colobus monkey exhibit at Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail was refurbished earlier this year.
