Earth’s mightiest heroes have a world to save—and more than one person answering to “Cap”—in a new teaser for Avengers: Doomsday.
‘Captain…s…America?’
Marvel’s latest preview starts with more foreboding scenes and warnings about the new threat facing the multiversal cast of heroes, with text cutaways reading “THIS DECEMBER, THREE TEAMS WILL STAND AS ONE.”
The brief teaser ends on a lighter moment, however, with a quirky situation involving Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson, and John Walker
In the candid scene, Scott Lang/Ant-Man, addresses Steve Rogers as “Cap,” before correcting himself toward Sam Wilson, who is in actuality the correct and current Captain America.
John Walker/U.S. Agent complicates matters by reminding the group that he also briefly held the title. Scott ultimately lands on “Captains America” to address all three.
The joke draws on the three characters’ shared history with the mantle. Steve passed his shield to Sam at the end of Avengers: Endgame. In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the U.S. government appointed Walker as Captain America after Sam surrendered the shield. Walker was subsequently stripped of the title and became U.S. Agent, while Sam embraced his role as Captain America.
The teaser also revisits another moment from Endgame: Steve’s ability to wield Thor’s enchanted hammer, Mjolnir.
Holding the hammer, Steve playfully asks Thor whether it bothers him. Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder responds honestly: “You know it does.”
