One of the BEST things you can do to ride as many attractions as possible on your trip to Disney World is to utilize the single rider lines, but WHY did nobody warn me that I’d have to sacrifice social awkwardness for a shorter wait time?!
Now, I’m not unaccustomed to being socially awkward, but the amount that I felt as a single rider riding Test Track was TOO MUCH, and here’s why…
Sitting With Strangers Can Be Awkward and Uncomfortable
First things first, just sitting next to strangers can be awkward and uncomfortable. You don’t know them. You’re all sweating. And you’ll most likely be very close to touching their arm or leg while on the ride. It’s AWKWARD. But you know what makes it even more awkward? When those strangers don’t want you on the ride with them.
We posted about this on our Instagram and had quite a few comments from single riders who were not wanted, including @brandonfl92, who said, “I had a guy so mad that I was getting into the car was going to be sitting next to their kid. He told the cast member he had never had to have a stranger next to them, and then the cast member just told me to get in, so I did lol.”
A lot of the awkwardness comes from the dirty looks those strangers give to the single riders riding with them. @dgrenteria had an experience like this, commenting, “The worst is when the second person realizes they have to sit in the middle and they give that look that implies they think they should get an outside seat.” @lauraaaaachristine actually had her ride RUINED by the strangers they sat with, writing, “I was a single rider and hopped on and the older women looked at me with the most disgusted look on her face.. “You’re coming on with us?!?” I couldn’t even enjoy the ride after that comment.”

It’s Even More Uncomfortable on Test Track
But those dirty looks aren’t the only awkward moments you’ll encounter as a single rider. When it comes to Test Track, the most uncomfortable situation you’ll be put in is buckling your seatbelt. Yes, they keep you safe and secure while you’re on the ride, but you know what they also do? Put you in an awkward situation where you come INCHES from touching a stranger’s butt.
And this goes the other way, too… Not only will YOU be close to touching your seat buddy’s butt when you’re buckling your seatbelt, but your seat buddy will also come close to touching YOUR butt. Talk about awkward situations… And some of our readers have the same experience, including @_makingmagichappen_, who said, “Ooh, I’m glad it’s not just me this happens to,” and @_tytyclayyy_, who wrote, “Did the single rider line this past weekend for radiator springs racers in Disneyland, defs awk.” Same ride system, different park — totally understandable.
What I Wish I Had Known Before Riding Test Track in EPCOT
You May Want To Sacrifice A Short Wait For Comfort
So, if you’re not ready to take it to the next level with a stranger in Disney World, it may be worth waiting in the standby queue or grabbing a Lightning Lane, so you can ride it with your friends and family. It’s a little less awkward touching their butts than it is a stranger’s butt.
This Hollywood Studios Ride Just Got A BIG Upgrade!
Not Every Single Rider Line Is Awkward
But don’t fret — not every single rider line in Disney World has the insane level of awkwardness that Test Track does! The only other single rider line with seatbelts in Disney World is Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Hollywood Studios. All of the other single rider lines use lap bars (Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure) or seatbelts with individual seats (Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run). There’s a CHANCE you will still get those dirty looks from strangers, but at least the distance from their butts is more significant.
And there may even be a chance where the strangers will be welcoming and WON’T give you dirty looks! @suehodgeparker uses her humor to escape the awkwardness: “I just introduce myself as their new family member. Most families accept me. Probably because I do my best sweet old lady imitation.”

You May Experience Awkwardness In The Standard Queue
Even though a lot of the awkwardness comes from being a single rider, there are also some rides that you may be uncomfortable riding even when waiting in the standard queue, and this includes standby and Lightning Lane. You see, some rides have so much capacity that you may be sitting next to strangers anyway, AND some of these attractions have those seatbelts with close encounters to your neighbor’s bottom. This includes Soarin’, Tower of Terror, and Star Tours: The Adventures Continue.
So, the moral of the story is that things may be socially awkward in Disney World, but you’re still going to have a magical time (even if you’ll be freaking out the whole time leading up to and partially during the ride).
